2009-04-29: Brilliant Database v8 Released



Brilliant Database v8 Server, Professional and Workplace editions are now available for download and order.

Update Information.

To update your current version of Brilliant Database to the new one you should:

  1. Download the new version;
  2. Install it;
  3. Fill in the upgrade form. You will automatically receive registration keys for v8 in case your one-year period of free updates has not expired or links to purchase new versions at 50% discount in case your period of free updates has expired. Use these links to purchase a new registration key for v8 with 50% discount.
  4. Activate the software using the new registration key.

Changes in version 8

  • New field with support of formatting (RTF). Store and edit full-fledged text with any fonts, highlighting, colour, pictures and so on.
  • Calendar. Now you can conveniently present and edit records on the calendar (by months, weeks, days and hours). When records are moved and edited using the calendar, the corresponding fields of records will be changed.
  • Graphs. Version 8 features a new system of making up graphs and reports, allowing you to display 9 different types of graphs, combine them, make up dynamic graphs and display all of them right on the main screen of the program.
  • Reports. Now you can more easily get the total and subtotal for the selection of records, group it by any field and execute any operation or a script for the selection.
  • Highlighting with colour by rules. It is now possible to specify different colour schemes depending on fields’ values for tables and reports. For example, you can highlight non-paid orders with red, and paid orders – with green.
  • Entirely reviewed and simplified mechanism of importing data from external sources (Internet pages, Outlook, text documents and so on). To import, for example, actual currency rates to your database, you even do not have to write scripts.
  • Possibility of work with external database. Now it is very easy to work with an external Access or Excel database. You can input data to the external database, as well as read it from there.
  • Managing folders. You can block standard operations for every folder – manual dragging of records, creating or deleting records when pressing the Delete key and so on. You can also link every type of records to a specific folder so that when a record created from the Add menu, it is automatically placed to a necessary folder.
  • Field for working with files. Now you can store files of any type right in the record, in a specific field. In contrast to usual attachments, using one or several fields will allow you to structure files. For example, you can create 2 fields: one for a file with the task text (for example, in the MS Word format) and the other for a fulfilled task (for example, in the form of a ZIP archive).
  • Managing work over the network with scripts. Using specific commands in scripts, you can send messages over the network, break connections, make a database available over the network.
  • Mask for simple fields. For example, you can define the “###-XX” mask to allow entering only three digits and two letters in the specified field.
  • New Welcome Screen. Now it is easier to create a new database, open an existing one, either locally or remotely.

Features added since v8 Beta

  • New Find/Replace dialog with AND/OR support.
  • Relational Lookup Field now can show images.
  • All scripts are shown in the script designer window now (scripts for forms, folders, etc)
  • Predefined variable [$old_value] for the “On Change” script - it stores previous value of a field.
  • Global variables synchronization.
  • Mathematics – new operator: % - returns residue of division.
  • Improved backup.
  • Printing – possibility to print each group on a new page.
  • New actions palette.
  • “Real Delete” action
  • New “On software close” timer – allows executing a script then user tries to close the software.
  • Text Button: An entered value can be copied to the [$input] variable.
  • Calendars, Charts and HTML pages can be printed now.

Minor features added since v7.5:

  • Restoring records from the recycle bin to the source folder.
  • Fine adjustment of the “Select Records” window for relational fields – it is possible to add any text and set up any rules for filtering records.
  • A possibility to specify a layout separately for every folder — a list of records, a list and form, only form — is added.
  • New Query and Report wizard.
  • New Form wizard and new form templates.
  • Additional actions for fields are added that can be re-assigned (pressing Enter, right-click and so on).
  • A possibility to mark fields as system is added. The fields become not available to the user at search, manual sorting and so on.
  • Improved Report Style Editor
  • Custom Export Templates are split into more convenient Send e-mail, Create a Web Page, Copy to Ms Word, Copy to Clipboard and Export to text file templates.
  • Relational field can be selected as a source of records for printing/exporting and so on.
  • New operations for formatting text are added to the existing 20 ones: MD5 – get hash of a string, and SIZE – get the length of a string.
  • A possibility to clone folders is added.
  • Fast static formulas (the same for all records) are added.
  • A possibility to prohibit a database user to display or hide specific columns in a table is added.
